To understand what “Tianmingren” means, let’s start with the term “Tianming.”

The term “Tianming” is a Chinese word, which literally means the will of the Tao (the Way of Heaven). The earliest record of “Tianming” is in the Book of Rites (Lunyu), where it is said, “At the age of 50, one knows the will of the Tao.”

Knowing one’s fate has many meanings.

It can be knowing what is beyond human control, such as tasks assigned by fate or things you were born to do; of course, it can also be each person’s self-awareness, knowing what they should do in their lifetime and devoting themselves wholeheartedly to it.
